Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) Treatment in Petaling Jaya

Conjunctivitis, often called pink eye, is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear layer over the white of the eye. It can be viral, bacterial or allergic, and the treatment is different for each, so an eye examination helps you use the right one.

Our eye specialists examine red and irritated eyes at our clinic in Damansara Utama, which is open seven days a week. Meet our doctors

The three main types

TypeTypical signsUsual treatment
ViralWatery discharge and red eyes, often with a cold or sore throat; very contagiousUsually settles on its own in one to two weeks; cool compresses and lubricating drops for comfort
BacterialSticky yellow or green discharge; lids stuck together on wakingAntibiotic eye drops or ointment prescribed after examination
AllergicIntense itching, watery eyes and swollen lids, usually in both eyes, often with sneezingAvoiding triggers, allergy eye drops and cool compresses

Symptoms

  • Red or pink eyes
  • Watering or discharge
  • Itching, burning or a gritty feeling
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Crusting around the lashes in the morning

When to see a doctor

See an eye doctor promptly if you have any of the following, because they can signal a more serious problem than simple conjunctivitis:

  • Eye pain or reduced vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • A red, painful eye while wearing contact lenses
  • A newborn with red or sticky eyes
  • A weakened immune system
  • No improvement after a few days

Preventing spread

  • Wash your hands often and avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
  • Do not share towels, pillowcases or eye make-up
  • Stop wearing contact lenses until your eyes are well
  • Ask your doctor when it is safe to return to work or school

How we diagnose and treat it

We examine the eye with a slit-lamp microscope to confirm the type and to rule out other causes, such as an infection of the cornea, which needs different treatment.

Treatment is matched to the cause. Antibiotics do not help viral conjunctivitis, so an accurate diagnosis helps you avoid unnecessary drops.

Frequently asked questions

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis spread easily through hands, towels and shared items. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious.
