Laser Eye Surgery in Petaling Jaya: Your Options
Laser eye surgery reshapes the front surface of the eye, the cornea, so light focuses properly on the retina and you depend less on glasses or contact lenses. TransPRK, LASIK and SMILE are the main laser options, and ICL is a lens implant for people who are not suited to laser. A full eye assessment decides which one fits you.
Our eye specialists include experts in cataract and refractive surgery, with a special interest in TransPRK and ICL. Meet our doctors
The main vision correction options
- TransPRK: a surface laser treatment with no blade and no flap. The laser treats the outer layer of the cornea in a single no-touch step.
- LASIK: a thin flap is made in the cornea, the laser reshapes the tissue underneath, and the flap is put back.
- SMILE: a laser creates a small disc of tissue inside the cornea, which is removed through a tiny incision. It is used mainly for short-sightedness and astigmatism.
- ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): a lens is placed inside the eye without removing corneal tissue. It suits high prescriptions and thin corneas, and it can be removed if needed.
The options at a glance
| Procedure | Flap or incision | Often considered when | Early recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| TransPRK | No flap, no incision | Thinner corneas, active lifestyles | Some discomfort for the first few days; vision improves over days to weeks |
| LASIK | Corneal flap | A healthy cornea of adequate thickness | Usually comfortable; vision is often clear within a day or two |
| SMILE | Small incision | Short-sightedness and astigmatism | Usually quick; vision settles over days |
| ICL | Small incision into the eye | High prescriptions or thin corneas | Usually quick; follow-up checks are needed |
Who is suitable for laser eye surgery?
Most suitable candidates are adults whose glasses or contact lens prescription has been stable for at least a year, with healthy eyes and a cornea thick enough for the planned treatment.
Laser surgery may not be advised if you have:
- A prescription that is still changing
- Keratoconus or another corneal irregularity
- Severe dry eye
- Certain autoimmune or other eye conditions
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, when vision can fluctuate
If laser is not suitable for you, ICL or another option may be.
What happens at the assessment
Before any procedure we measure your prescription, the shape and thickness of your cornea, your pupil size and the health of your tear film, and we examine the front and back of the eye. These tests show whether surgery is safe for you and which option fits best.
Contact lens wearers are usually asked to stop wearing their lenses for a period before the measurements. You may be advised against surgery if the tests show it is not right for you.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery depends on the procedure. After surface treatments such as TransPRK, the eyes can feel gritty or sensitive for the first few days and vision clears gradually. After LASIK, SMILE or ICL, vision is often clearer within a day or two.
Every procedure needs eye drops and follow-up visits. Your doctor will tell you when you can return to work, exercise and swimming.
Risks to know about
- Dry eye, which is usually temporary
- Glare or halos around lights at night
- Under or over correction, which may need a touch-up
- Gradual return of some prescription over time
- Infection or inflammation, which is uncommon
- Flap-related problems, which apply to LASIK
Your doctor will explain the risks that apply to you before you decide.
